CAPTAIN'S CORNER

Grouper and amberjacks are so plentiful we routinely have been catching limits, and the water has been so clear we have had visibility at 60 feet. Amberjacks are holding on most of our offshore shipwrecks and springs. Most jacks have been caught in at least 90 feet. The best bait has been live blue runners. The jacks are 20-45 pounds.

The gag grouper are feeding best in the mornings. We have produced nice catches in 40-95 feet. Because the water is so clear, we have dropped our leader size to 40-50-pound test from the normal 50-60-pound test. In clear water larger gags can become leader-shy and not bite heavy tackle. Our most effective baits have been frozen sardines, live pinfish, threadfins or blue runners with their tails clipped. Mangrove snapper and trigger fish are feeding over near-shore reefs and ledges. Use 30-pound class tackle to catch snapper and trigger fish. Blackfin tuna are still being caught trolling tuna lures in 120 feet and deeper.
