The Tampa Bay Peace Education Program will hold a Hiroshima and Nagasaki Memorial Lantern Floating from 8 to 9 p.m. Saturday, along the water at the entrance to The Pier, 800 Second Ave. NE. The memorial vigil will honor the victims of the 1945 atomic bombings of Japan, and will protest the continued use of weapons of mass destruction. The lanterns are made of paper, filled with candles, and designed with drawings and messages to convey the program's commitment to nonviolence and their opposition to U.S. sanctions on Iraq. The vigil is modeled upon the annual ceremony in Hiroshima where lanterns are floated down the Motoyasu River in commemoration of the souls of those who died in the bombings.
