Local soldiers participate at FANG Summer Camp

Florida Army National Guard Cadet Samantha Hamilton of St. Petersburg participated in eight days of military training under the JROTC program. She is a senior at Boca Ciega High School. Many cadets continue their military training by enlisting in FANG or other military services to qualify for full scholarships to various colleges and universities. This is the 12th year FANG has hosted this program at Camp Blanding in northeast Florida.

Medical personnel from C Co., St. Petersburg, helped in providing medical support for the 800 cadets from throughout Florida attending the camp.

Completion of training

Navy Seaman Nicholas K. Springfield, son of Paula Springfield of St. Petersburg, has completed basic training at Naval Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He will attend "A" school in Meridian, Miss. Springfield is a 1998 graduate of Boca Ciega High School.

Graduations

Army 2nd Lt. Jonathan S. Zimmer, son of retired Lt. Col. Leon "Bud" and Jane Zimmer of Clearwater, graduated May 29th from the U.S. Military Academy,West Point, N. Y. He earned a bachelor of science degree and was commissioned to his present rank in the Army Corps of Engineers. Zimmer will attend the Engineer Officers Basic Training School, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., from July to November. From there he will report to Fort Polk, La., for his first duty station. Zimmer attended Southside Fundamental Middle School, St. Petersburg, and graduated in 1995 from Dunedin High School. He is the third generation in his family to choose to serve in the armed forces. His grandfather served in France during World War I.

Deployments and assignments

Marine Pfc. Mark E. Henius, son of Edward and Terri Henius of St. Petersburg, has reported for duty with the First Marine Air Wing, MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. He is a 1996 graduate of Northeast High School.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Douglas R. Warnell, son-in-law of Victoria B. St. Cere of St. Petersburg, has completed a maiden voyage aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Walnut, home ported in Honolulu. He is a 1985 graduate of Pinellas Park High School.
