ETC.: Eiland pitched well in his last start at Oakland on Friday but lost. He is 1-5 with a 4.58 ERA in eight starts, 0-1 with a 12.91 ERA in four relief appearances. Meche is a 20-year-old rookie who had not pitched higher than Class A before this season. He was the Mariners' first-round pick in the 1996 draft. The Rays are off Thursday, then open a six-game homestand against Cleveland and Baltimore.

Manager Larry Rothschild had a familiar face with him in the clubhouse Tuesday: his older brother Dave, who was up from San Diego on business. While Larry was developing as a pitcher, Dave apparently played a pretty good shortstop. "He got all the family speed," Larry Rothschild said. "He's the one who taught me how to play."
