Big games reap honors at Parkview

Wendy Smith and Walter Clevenger are named Bowlers of the Month.

July was a big month for Parkview Lanes bowlers Wendy Smith and Walter Clevenger, and both have been rewarded as Bowlers of the Month at the center in Holder.

Smith dominated the female competition by scoring 172 pins over her average, firing a scratch series of 652. Carrying a 170 average, Smith had games of 242, 208 and 202 in the Monday Night Special league.

Clevenger, who also has a 170 average, rolled an even 600 series in the Holder Hotshots league to score 130 pins over his average.

UPCOMING MEETINGS: Many area bowling establishments are busy preparing for fall leagues, most of which begin in September. The following is a list of organizational meetings that bowlers might want to take note of:

Sportsmen's Bowl: First Nighters Men's league, Aug. 17, 6:30 p.m.; Tri-County Men's league, Aug. 18, 6:30 p.m.; Ladies Handicap league, Aug. 24, 10 a.m.; Early Birds Ladies Handicap league, Aug. 25, 10 a.m.; Hits and Misses, Senior league (which bowls Thursdays), Aug. 25, 1 p.m.; Pin Busters Ladies Handicap league, Aug. 26, 7 p.m.; Kings and Queens Senior Handicap league, Aug. 27, 1 p.m.; Friday Nighters Handicap Mixed league, Aug. 27, 7 p.m.; His and Hers Handicap Mixed league, Aug. 30, 6:30 p.m.; Sun Bowlers Senior Mixed league, Aug. 30, 9:45 a.m.

Also, there will be registration of bowlers ages 5-21 for the YABA Youth Olympic league on Aug. 21, with play beginning Sept. 11, and the Youth-Adult league will have signups at 1 p.m. Sept. 12

Beverly Hills Bowl: The Suncoast Seniors will hold their organizational meeting at 1 p.m. Aug. 24 at the center. Play begins at 1 p.m. Sept. 7. Call Shirley Bozzo at (352) 746-1012 with questions.

The Thursday Hills Gang Senior Mixed league will meet at noon Aug. 26, and the Beverly Hills Senior Mixed Bowling league will meet at 1 p.m. Aug. 31. Bowlers must be 55 or older in each, and play begins Sept. 7. Call Jim Logan at 746-9637 with questions.

PARKVIEW LANES: The next 12-week Holder Hotshots Mixed league will begin Aug. 19 and currently has space for two individuals and two four-person teams. The ABC/WIBC-sanctioned league bowls at 7 p.m. Thursdays. The weekly cost is $10. To register, call Peggy Nevels at (352) 465-0757 or the center at (352) 489-6933.

Spaces also are filling quickly for the Sunday Mixed Doubles No Tap Tourney. Bowlers roll four games of the popular 8/9-pin format, followed by Crazy Eights.

The cost is $12 per person and the field is limited to 30 teams. The event includes pizza provided by Bill & Gerrie's Deli in Holder, and music of the '50s and '60s, To register, call 489-6933 as soon as possible.

MANATEE MADNESS: School is about to open, but Manatee Lanes will continue to offer several activities for its young bowlers.

Registration for youth leagues will be from noon-2 p.m. Aug. 21 and from 4-6 p.m. Aug. 24. Participants must bring a Social Security number and $10.50 sanction fee; the pee-wee sanction fee is $3.50. Each registrant will receive a coupon good for two games of bowling.

The Saturday league will begin Aug. 28 at 9:30 a.m. and the Tuesday league will begin Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. The weekly cost is $2.50 for pee-wees (one game on Saturdays for ages 5-and-under with bumpers); $4.25 for bantams (two games for ages 8-and-under); and $5.75 for juniors and seniors (three games for ages 12-21).

Bowlers will receive a league T-shirt and shoe rental and an end-of-the-season Verti-Glow banquet. There also are discounts on open bowling and trophies and awards. Anyone bowling in two Manatee Lanes youth leagues will receive free open bowling anytime lanes are available.

Meanwhile, Manatee Lanes has summer specials that are still going strong.

There is "Monday Madness" from noon until 6 p.m., when open bowling is 95 cents per game. On Wednesdays, you can bowl for 85 cents per game if you bring in a canned food item to help the needy. Thursday nights there is all-you-can bowl action from 9 p.m. until midnight for $15, including a pitcher of beverage. On "Frugal Fridays," you can bowl from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for $1.10 per game.
