Hernando earns final berth

With two out in the top of the eighth inning, Hernando County centerfielder Carolyn Gant hit a bloop single behind second base to score Jenn Reyes from second for the go-ahead run as Hernando, representing Florida, defeated Tennessee 11-9 in the Dixie Belles World Series Wednesday night.

With the score tied at 7, catcher Reyes doubled to the leftfield fence. Gant singled to right-center and Reyes slid in under the tag to give Florida the lead.

"At first I thought she had me," Reyes said. "I honestly couldn't say. I just knew I needed to get my big butt moving."

About the game-winning hit, Gant said, "I was like, "Oh my God. Drop.' Then I saw Jenn score and I couldn't stop myself from jumping."

Florida advanced to the final tonight at 6:30 against Alabama or Louisiana. Tennessee led 7-3 after two innings but Florida scored two runs in the third and two in the sixth to tie it.
