NOTES: Last year, Billy Mayfair closed with 5-under 67 for a two-stroke victory over Scott Verplank. Over the weekend, Brent Geiberger won his first PGA Tour title, the Greater Hartford Open, by three strokes over Skip Kendall. Tony Lema is the only player to repeat as champion. Lema won in 1964-65. Julius Boros is the only other golfer to win the tournament twice. He did it in 1963 and in 1967. Dewey Arnette birdied a record-tying eight consecutive holes during the 1987 tournament.

NOTES: The is the first year for the tournament. Over the weekend, Karrie Webb won her first major with birdie on four of the last five holes at the du Maurier Classic in Priddis, Alberta. Webb won $180,000 last week to shatter the LPGA Tour's season earnings record with $1,254,051 in just 18 events. Webb needs just nine points for LPGA Hall of Fame induction. Juli Inkster shot above par in the third round last week for the first time since April 25.

Senior PGA Tour

WHAT: Long Island Classic.

WHEN: Friday-Sunday.

WHERE: Jericho, N.Y.

COURSE: Meadow Brooks Club (6,842 yards, par 72).

PURSE: $1.2-million.

WINNER'S SHARE: $180,000.

TV: 3-5 p.m. Friday, 2-4 p.m. Saturday, 5:30-7 p.m. Sunday, ESPN.

NOTES: South Africa's Gary Player became the second-oldest winner in tour history at last year's tournament. Player, who will turn 64 on Nov. 1, had three straight 4-under 68s. Dave Eichelberger won the Utah Showdown over the weekend for his fifth Senior PGA Tour victory. He defeated Dana Quigley on the first playoff hole.
