The trial of Sean Grieco, charged with hitting another man in the head with a baseball bat in a dispute outside a Northdale Chick-fil-A restaurant, continued Wednesday with testimony from defense witnesses, including Grieco.
Investigators say a dispute, which started the night of Jan. 23 over nothing more than two groups of teens giving each other hard looks, culminated in a fight in the restaurant's parking lot.
They say Grieco grabbed an aluminum bat from his pickup and smashed Christopher Phillips in the left temple. Phillips remained in a coma for days and continues to suffer seizures, pain and memory loss. Grieco, 18, is also accused of taking a second swing at Phillips' friend Edgar York and fracturing York's elbow. But Grieco said he acted in self-defense that night after Phillips came at him.
Attorneys are scheduled to make their closing arguments this morning before the jury begins deliberations. If convicted of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery, Grieco, who has no criminal record, could face life in prison.
