Yanks' Nelson strong in Tampa rehab start

New York Yankees pitcher Jeff Nelson sailed through his second rehab start after elbow surgery, working a scoreless inning for the Tampa Yankees against the Phillies on Wednesday night.

Nelson struck out two and walked one.

"I got some work today and I feel good," said Nelson, who threw 11 of 21 pitches for strikes. "I'm going to try to make the most of it every time I go out."

Nelson threw a perfect inning, needing six pitches, Monday in a rookie-level Gulf Coast League game and is scheduled to make rehab appearances at Lakeland on Friday and Saturday.

Jackson Melian homered and drove in five runs and John Rodriguez homered and drove in four in the Yankees' 9-4 win. Randy Flores (10-2) pitched eight innings in relief of Nelson.

ST. PETERSBURG 6, FORT MYERS 2: Jose Velazquez went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Paul Hoover added two RBI to lead the host Devil Rays. Juan Rosario (4-3) allowed two runs on six hits in 7 innings.

DUNEDIN 5, CHARLOTTE 4: Centerfielder Fred Soriano was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Greg Morrison, back from the Pan Am Games, was 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the host Blue Jays. Leo Estrella went six innings to earn his 10th win, and Bob File picked up his 21st save.
