NFL tough on family

Lonnie Marts is well aware of the business side of the NFL.

But the new Jaguars linebacker has two children, 6 and 3, and a pregnant wife who are having a difficult time dealing with the changes.

The former Buc was released by the Titans in a cost-cutting move July 28 and signed with Jacksonville on Saturday.

"I don't think you ever get used to it," said Marts, a nine-year veteran whose $1.1-million salary won't make going to his fourth team any easier emotionally. "I had to make a decision within two hours or so. Then, you've got to explain to the children that we've got to move. We won't see our friends anymore."

Shooting for stars

Oscar-winning actor Geena Davis qualified for the Olympic trials semifinal by finishing 29th out of 300 at the national archery championship July 12-16 in Oxford, Ohio. Davis and 31 others will vie for three Olympic berths and one alternate spot Aug. 22-24 in Bloomfield, N.J.

"When I was on vacation in Italy recently, I entered a tournament in Florence," Davis said. "The other archers said, "What?' I won the tournament. They didn't expect that, either."

Davis, introduced to archery by watching the 1996 Olympics on television, practices five hours a day, six days a week.
