TAMPA _ An 89-year-old woman died Thursday after a maintenance worker found her floating in the swimming pool at the retirement complex where she lived.
Susan Newton was found in the University Village pool about 11:40 a.m., the Sheriff's Office said. She had last been seen about 10:15 a.m.
Newton was taken to University Community Hospital, where she died.
The pool at the retirement complex, at 12401 N 22nd St., has been closed for repairs since July 26.
Tim Parker, the executive director of University Village, said Newton was in good health and frequently used the pool and adjacent exercise area. The cause of her death has not been determined.
"We don't even know that she drowned," Parker said.
