Man burned by asphalt treated and released

(ran PC edition of PASCO TIMES)

The man burned Thursday morning as he pumped liquid asphalt at the Grubbs Construction Co. plant at Florida Crushed Stone off Cobb Road was released later that dayfrom St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. Randolf Haynes, 36, suffered burns to his face, neck and hands. Two other men suffered minor burns. Grubbs spokesman John Richardson said the hose that was carrying the asphalt from the truck to the plant disconnected, causing the 280-degree asphalt to spew into a rubber bucket and splash on the men. It did not explode, Richardson said, as was reported by the Sheriff's Office and repeated in Friday's St. Petersburg Times. Richardson said the company was looking into what caused the disconnection, but he thought the Tampa company that supplied the hose failed to properly install the clamps.
