City commissioners decided Thursday night that the city's proposed ordinance requiring homeowners to erect barriers around swimming pools was too strict.
They asked city staff to rewrite the ordinance so that residents could put some type of fence around either the pool or their yard, but not both.
Commissioner Ed Hooper also suggested the new requirements apply to all residential pools, not just newly constructed ones.
The commission will reconsider the ordinance at its next meeting Aug. 19.
Homeowners who build a pool must get a city permit and are subject to pool inspections. The proposed ordinance would be enforced during those inspections.
