AVERAGE LEGENDS

There are those who have suggested the 3,000-hit club is not what it used to be. They say longevity has become as important as batting excellence. Though the point has some validity, it does not apply to Wade Boggs and Tony Gwynn. Not since Stan Musial in 1958 has a player reached 3,000 hits with a higher career batting average than Gwynn's .338. Boggs' .328 average is higher than any player in the past 40 years except Gwynn and Rod Carew. Below are the members of the exclusive club, plus Boggs, and their career batting average in the season when they got their 3,000th hit.
