Parents may buy supplemental accident insurance that provides coverage for their children during the school year at relatively low prices.

School district officials will send home insurance applications with students during the first week of school. Parents also can pick up applications at school offices.

The company providing the coverage is Bob Fowinkle's School Insurance Agency of Bradenton. The toll-free number is (800) 541-8256.

Several plans are available. Some cover children only while they are at school. Others provide 24-hour coverage. All coverage runs from the first day of school to the last.

Three options are available for basic at-school protection. They cost $6, $12 or $18 for the year. The higher the plan's cost, the more money would be paid out for various medical services the child might need.

There are three options for 24-hour coverage. They cost $48, $96 or $144 for the year. Again, a higher price tag means more coverage.

Students who play high school football or soccer must buy the sports coverage if their families do not have insurance of their own.
