The doctor was a friend of a Dade City family and was staying at their house when the incident occurred, police say.
A doctor with a practice in Zephyrhills was arrested Friday after he admitted to having sex with a 15-year-old girl, the Pasco County Sheriff's Office said.
Zafar Syed Shah, 33, an internal medicine and diabetes specialist at the Midtown Clinic, 5821 Gall Blvd., was charged with one felony count of lewd and lascivious behavior. He was being held in the Pasco County jail Saturday in lieu of $20,000 bail and could not be reached for comment.
Shah was staying at the home of a Dade City family Thursday night when the alleged crime occurred, the Sheriff's Office said. According to reports, Shah was a close family friend and didn't want to drive back to his home in Hunter's Green, an upscale New Tampa subdivision.
The girl's mother woke up around 1 a.m. and discovered that her 15-year-old daughter was not in her room, reports said. The mother then walked into the living room and saw her daughter and Shah having intercourse on a mattress on the floor, according to reports.
The mother told detectives that she yelled for her husband and then attacked Shah, cursing as she hit him, reports said. Shah, according to the mother, said he loved the girl and intended to marry her once she turned 18, according to reports.
When the girl's stepfather appeared in the living room, Shah ran out of the house, got in his car and drove away, reports said.
The girl, whose name is being withheld by the Times because of her age and the nature of the crime, told detectives that she had sex on another occasion with Shah this year, reports said.
Shah admitted to having sex with the girl, the Sheriff's Office said.
Shah's partner at the Midtown Clinic, Dr. Ghani Abdul, declined to comment Saturday on his colleague's arrest.
State records indicate that Shah received his medical license in 1996. It expires at the end of January, according to records.
