Scout leader found in tree has foot amputated

Doctors have amputated the left foot of a Boy Scouts leader who was found hanging naked upside down from a tree as part of what investigators described as a solo sex act.

An hourlong surgery to amputate Clark Anthony Getz's foot above the ankle was successful, a spokesman for Orlando Regional Medical Center said Friday.

Getz, 42, has been hospitalized since Monday after authorities found him dangling from a rope about 12 feet off the ground. Blood flow to his feet had been cut off for more than 24 hours.

The left foot "developed an infection that needed to be taken care of before it got worse," said hospital spokesman, Joe Brown. "When you deprive a part of the body of oxygenated blood for 24 to 26 hours, tissue begins to die."
