A Crystal River couple were arrested on a variety of charges Saturday following a melee with sheriff's deputies.
Christopher Paul Leduc, 35, 2850 N Crede Ave., was arrested on charges of battery of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, criminal mischief and disorderly intoxication following the incident at 1 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Winn-Dixie supermarket in Meadowcrest. His companion, Stacey Mazzi, 34, of the same address was charged with disorderly intoxication.
According to arrest reports, Leduc began scuffling with deputies who spotted them in the parking lot, playing their truck radio very loud. When they asked Leduc to turn it down, he became combative. Deputies used a baton and struck Leduc with their hands to subdue him and place him under arrest. He also kicked out the passenger window in the rear seat of a sheriff's department car, the reports state.
His bail was set at $11,150. Mazzi's bail was set at $150.
Firefighters collect money for families
Firefighters from the Connell Heights Volunteer Fire Department held a boot drive over the weekend at State Road 44 and County Road 491 to raise money for families who have had fire-related losses.
The firefighters solicited donations from motorists at the intersection, using rubber fire boots to catch change and dollar bills. The money raised will be available to any needy family in the Connell Heights district that has suffered a loss that is not covered by insurance.
The firefighters will be conducting the drive again next month, said Scott Burkhart, Connell Heights fire chief.
"We're collecting money for renters and people who don't have insurance. These people, when they lose everything in a fire, they do lose everything," he said.
On Saturday, the firefighters collected about $1,100 and were hoping to match that on Sunday.
