Three people were killed and a fourth critically injured when the drivers of two cars took part in a drag race that ended with one of the cars flying across an intersection and smashing into a tree.

David Scozzafava, 20, Jose Nunez, 18, and Nilsa Rodriguez, 18, died in the crash that took place just before midnight Saturday, police said. They were in Scozzafava's black Chevy Impala SS.

A fourth person, Richard Ragusa, 20, was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he was in critical condition late Sunday.

Friends said Scozzafava and his passengers did not know the driver of the other car, 21-year-old Glenn Blackledge, or his passengers.

The two cars sped east on Sheridan Street, over the Florida Turnpike overpass, before hitting a dip at the intersection of State Road 7, police said.

The Impala became airborne and collided with the passenger side of the Mustang before smashing into a tree. Two of the four passengers in the Mustang had minor injuries.
