The Seminole Junior softball team beat a squad from Culpepper, Va., 13-2 Monday night to advance through the opening round of the Little League Southern Regional being played outside Louisville.

A team from District 12 (Dunedin/West Pasco) wasn't as successful, losing 6-3 to Charleston, W.Va., in the opening round of the Big League division after leading 3-1.

Seminole will play Midway, Texas, in the second round at 6:15 p.m. today. Midway beat a Georgia team 13-0. Dunedin/West Pasco will play at 8:30 p.m. today in the losers bracket; its opponent wasn't known at press time.

Seminole pitchers Nicole Goff nad Lisa Hasson combined to strike out seven batters and give up just four hits. While they were containing Culpepper's offense, Seminole jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning when Julie Beatty scored from third on a fielder's choice.

Seminole added three runs in the second as two players drew walks, Jackie Storm doubled and Culpepper made three throwing errors. The winners then erupted for a four-run sixth inning sparked by Michele Bannister's three-run double.

Preparation was the key, assistant coach Rob Hasson said. "The girls worked hard and stayed focused on the road," he said. "Nicole Goff pitched a great game and Lisa Hasson followed up by pitching three strong innings."

Dunedin seemed on its way to a win while leading 3-1, but Charleston went up 6-3 in the sixth inning as Sheena Smithers hit a three-run homer off Ashleigh Hatcher.

"We had some errors in the field," coach Joe Jayne said of the sixth. "Then that home run hurt us."
