Car wreck kills Brandon woman

A 45-year-old woman was killed early Tuesday when a 16-year-old driver ran a stop sign and collided with the passenger side of her Geo Metro, sheriff's deputies said. Helga Powell of 601 Valley Hill Circle in Brandon was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies said the accident happened at Wheeler Road and Lenna Avenue about 2:20 a.m. when Steven Sullivan, 16, of 609 S Kingsway Ave. in Seffner ran a stop sign and struck Powell's car. The impact sent Powell's car spinning into a utility pole, deputies said. Sullivan and his two passengers were taken to local hospitals.

21-year-old man found in river

GIBSONTON _ A 21-year-old man was found floating in the Alafia River about 6:35 p.m. Tuesday, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said. The name of the victim was not released because next of kin had not been notified. Deputies said they were investigating the death. Witnesses said they had last seen the man sitting on a dock by the river about 1:30 p.m.
