Wade Boggs is not the first pitcher to have 3,000 hits. But he is the first in 74 years. Four years after getting his 3,000th hit, Ty Cobb threw one shutout inning for the Tigers in 1925 _ and got a save. Although Boggs surrendered a run in his 1-inning appearance, he at least looked like a pitcher. Boggs usually sprints off the field from third base at the end of an inning, but he walked slowly to the dugout after the eighth. "Pitchers are allowed to walk," he said.
