If you want to be more involved in the arts, you might consider joining a new volunteer organization, the Friends of the Gulf Coast Museum of Art.
The group, led by chairwoman Marilyn Lokey, is seeking museum teachers, called docents, as well as gallery greeters, museum store clerks, librarians, education department program assistants and general clerical and administrative assistants.
Stacy Detro, marketing/membership coordinator, will oversee the activities of the group, which plans an organizational meeting this month. In addition to regular volunteer hours, there will be quarterly general meetings, social activities, speakers, entertainment and an annual volunteer recognition luncheon in the spring.
Those who want to be in the group must also be members of the art museum. They will be invited to the grand opening membership preview of the museum's new administrative offices and exhibit halls Sept. 18. The 45,000-square-foot art museum is part of the 182-acre complex to be known as Pinewood Cultural Park. Other components are Heritage Village and the Florida Botanical Gardens, which is under construction.
The public can attend the grand opening by joining the museum at a one-year reduced rate as follows: individual, $20 (regularly $30); couple or family, $25 (normally $40); or members of Les Fauves, an organization for people 20 to 40 years old, $30 (regularly $50). Call the art museum for further information.
