A DeLand man who threw his two small sons out a second-story window in a drunken rage and then walked past the bleeding boys sprawled on the ground was convicted Wednesday.
Eugene Alfonzo Harris, 23, showed no emotion when the verdict finding him guilty of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse was read. Harris' family members rushed from the courtroom in tears. Ramona Mims, 27, the children's mother, showed no expression and would not comment afterward.
Early the morning of Jan. 13, the boys, Eugene Harris Jr., then 23 months, and Jalen Mims, then 7 months, were tossed out of Mims' bedroom window. That night Harris had been drinking, argued with Mims and threatened to "see could they (the boys) fly."
The boys, who suffered head injuries and scrapes, recovered, although Jalen was on a hospital respirator for a while.
