Mutiny adds Addo to roster

The Mutiny waived Bolivian forward Jefferson Gottardi Wednesday to make room for Ghanian defender Joe Addo. Addo received his work visa last Friday and will play Friday against Colorado.

Gottardi signed with the Mutiny on Feb. 2 and was hailed as the scoring threat the team lacked. But he played in only 11 games before a severe ankle sprain on June 25 put him on the disabled list. He scored four goals.

"Jefferson has talent that we will miss seeing mature," Mutiny coach Tim Hankinson said. "But with the number of season-ending losses to defenders we have gone through, the inconsistency in the back has convinced me that a player of Joe Addo's ability as a natural defender is necessary.."

The signing of Addo, a member of Ghana's national team, was necessary because of a season-ending injury to defender Jan Eriksson and the retirement of R.T. Moore. Defenders Steve Trittschuh (red card) and Chad McCarty (yellow card points) are ineligible for Friday's game.

Gottardi was waived because Major League Soccer teams can have only four foreign players on the active roster.

Raul Diaz Arce was named the MLS Player of the Month for July. Diaz Arce, acquired on July 19, played five games in July, with five goals and four assists.

Midfielder Steve Ralston and McCarty have been called up to the U.S. national team player pool for a Sept. 8 friendly against Jamaica. The 30-player pool will have final call-ups Aug. 30 consisting of 18 players and four alternates. Neither player would miss an MLS game if selected.
