Neighborhood groups get office space

Tampa neighborhood groups will have an office of their own by Oct. 1, paid for by taxpayers, city officials said Wednesday. The Neighborhood Resource Center will be on the second floor of Union Station, the restored downtown railroad station the city is buying from CSX Transportation, said Julie Harris, Tampa's neighborhood liaison.

Motorcyclist dies after

collision on Big Bend Road

TAMPA _ A 31-year-old Valrico man has died after his motorcycle collided with a car on Big Bend Road. Florida Highway Patrol officials said Charles Franklin Fagg Jr. of 3707 Crestwood Drive in Valrico was going west on a motorcycle on Big Bend Road near U.S. 301 at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday. A car driven by Carole Gill, 42, of Riverview was headed east on Big Bend Road and turned left in front of Fagg's motorcycle, officials said. Fagg, who was thrown from his motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Gill was taken to Brandon Hospital with minor injuries.

Bomb squad is called

to Tampa home

TAMPA _ The Sheriff's Office bomb squad was called to a home at 7143 Pelican Island Drive on Wednesday night after deputies discovered an object inside the home that appeared to be some type of explosive device. Deputies had been called to the home to remove a 52-year-old man who had barricaded himself inside, refusing to come out for hours. After entering the home about 9:50 p.m., deputies took the man into custody and drove him to a local hospital for counseling. The man's name was not released by deputies.

No charges had been filed late Wednesday night.
