Trey Dunwody, the boy who battled a rare blood cancer for seven years, died Thursday at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

The 9-year-old, who had acute lymphoblastic leukemia, had recently undergone a bone marrow transplant after a long and agonizing donor search that included numerous public appeals and nine matches that fell though.

Trey's family background made finding a donor nearly impossible. His mother, Cathy, is Cuban, and his father, John, is of white Anglo background. In the end, a Danish woman matched and donated her marrow.

At the time of the transplant, doctors had given Trey a 60-40 chance of long-term survival.
