The last hole on the front nine is hard enough without hitting your tee shot behind a tree. That's what Stuart Appleby did at the ninth Thursday, hooking his drive into the rough. No problem, he hooked his approach shot around the tree, onto the green _ and into the hole for an eagle-2.
Appleby's shot of the day was a rare stroke of good fortune on the ninth, which played as the toughest hole at Medinah. It yielded just 11 birdies and played to an average of 4.287.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
"On a whim I went to the media room (Wednesday) and listened to Ben Crenshaw give his speech about the Ryder Cup and what can you say? I could have walked through brick walls after that speech he gave talking about the Ryder Cup. It meant so much to me. It just jacked me up." _ West Palm Beach club pro Bruce Zabriski, who shot an opening-round 70.
