Man charged with threatening judge

A Winter Haven man was arrested by federal marshals Thursday morning and charged with threatening a federal judge.

David Flores, 19, was in a courtroom where his brother, Jose Flores, was convicted of trafficking in methamphetamine in Polk County.

An arrest report said David Flores made eye contact with his brother, drew his index finger across his throat and pointed in the direction of U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday, who was leaving the bench at that moment. Then he made the gesture a second time, the report said.

Merryday apparently did not see the motion.

A federal magistrate ordered Flores to be held in Hillsborough County Jail without bail Thursday.
