Couples celebrate anniversaries

Janet and George Kipp of Palm Harbor celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently with two parties, one at the Reef Club, Indian Rocks Beach, and the second at Leverock's restaurant, with family visiting from North Dakota, Minnesota, Virginia and Florida. They were married July 2, 1949, at Grace Episcopal Church, Rice Lake, Wis.

They came here in 1988 from Bismarck, N.D. He retired as a department store manager for V.P. Herberger's, and she was a registered nurse at the North Dakota State Health Department. They are members of St. Alfred's Episcopal Church, Palm Harbor, the Highland Lakes Homeowners Association and Highland Lakes Travel Club.

He established the St. Alfred's Gift Shop in 1997 and is a group Bible studies leader. They have three children and five grandchildren.

Devona and Albert Xander of Largo celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at the new Crabby Bill's on Tyrone Boulevard. They were married July 16, 1930, in Washington, D.C.

They became winter residents in 1987 and moved here in 1989 from Silver Spring, Md., where they owned and operated a Shell service station for 30 years. He is a Mason. They have a son, a daughter, two grandsons and three grandchildren.

Gwen and Dave Waddell, Clearwater, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a renewal of vows at Calvary Baptist Church, Clearwater, followed by a dinner for family and friends hosted by their children. They were married July 9, 1949, at St. John's Evangelical Church, Kankakee, Ill.

They came here in 1957 from Joliet, Ill., and are members of Calvary Baptist Church. They have two daughters, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Emilia "Millie" and Carl DeStefano of Largo celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary with a family dinner. They were married July 31, 1936, in Pennsylvania.

They came here in 1988 from Pittsburgh where he worked as a truck driver, and she operated a child care service. They have two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Madelon and Walter Horne of Largo recently observed their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married July 22, 1939, in Columbus, Ohio.

They came here in 1972 from Columbus after he retired as a supervisor for General Motors. She worked for Colonial Stores in Columbus. He was born in Valrico. They are members of Seminole First Baptist Church, and at 87 he still enjoys golf and she sews. They have a son, three grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Dietary class serves up own graduation banquet

Recently, a graduation banquet was held at Barrington Terrace for the dietary managers class, and certificates and scholarships were awarded by Gulf Central District of the Florida Dietary Managers Association. Eleven students planned, prepared, served and shared a Polynesian buffet for themselves, guests, and faculty.

Bill Dunn presented certificates of completion to each graduate. Mark D. Prusak, valedictorian, and Jayne F. Soref and Joseph M. Tutko, co-salutatorians, were given certificates from their instructor, Lynn Robertson. Prusak also received a first-place scholarship, and Soref and Tutko, second-place scholarships.
