Candles not for college

Leah Garrett of Clearwater, a student at the University of Florida, offers these words of advice for those heading back to school: The candles we recommended last week as a way to make a residence-hall room (this term is preferred to the word "dorm") feel like home, along with incense and other flammable items, are prohibited at many schools for reasons of fire safety. Leah, who has lived in campus housing for two years and is starting two more, provides these suggestions for personalizing a home away from home: "Posters, stuffed animals, pillows, colorful patterns, one's personal style, andanything that's fun that will help you better adjust. That set of tennisrackets in the corner might just catch a neighbor's attention, and you've got a tennis partner. One other thing that is great for every student to know is that "You shouldn't just live in your room 24/7. Get out, meet people, go to class, and have fun.' "
