Deputy wounds woman in driveway showdown

A Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy wounded a woman with buckshot Saturday night after she refused to stop pointing a gun at him in the driveway of her ex-boyfriend's house in northeast Hillsborough County.

The woman, who had not been identified late Saturday, was shot in the lower area of the torso with a 12-gauge shotgun, said Sgt. Rod Reder, a Sheriff's Office spokesman. She was flown in stable condition to Tampa General Hospital.

Deputy Robert Rodriguez, 28, was placed on administrative leave with pay while the shooting is investigated, Reder said. Rodriguez has been on the force since December 1997 and had never fired his weapon on duty, Reder said.

Deputies were called to the home of Carl M. Branch, 47, of 15319 Morris Bridge Road. Branch told deputies an ex-girlfriend came into his home and fired a handgun multiple times. He ran out the back door with a cellular phone and called 911.

Rodriguez and Deputy Shawn Napolitano arrived to find the woman in the driveway of Branch's house. They ordered her to drop the gun but she refused, alternately pointing at them and lowering it. It was unclear what provoked Rodriguez to fire his weapon.

Records show that Branch was arrested July 12 on charges of false imprisonment and battery in a domestic violence case.
