Dr. Taina Rantenen will be the guest speaker at two programs Monday at the Heart and Vascular Pavilion of Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater. She will conduct a daytime workshop at 8:30 a.m. for clinicians, nurses, rehabilitation specialists and exercise trainers and make an evening presentation at 6:30 p.m. for the public. She will address the importance of early muscle strength training, how it prevents disabilities in the elderly and how such training can affect the daily activities of older persons.
Both programs are free, but seating is limited.
Dr. Rantenen is an associate professor of gerontology and public health at the University of Jyvaskyla and the University of Tampere, Finland, and was a visiting fellow last year at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md.
She has conducted workshops and clinics in Europe and the United States and has published more than 50 scientific articles.
