Historic hotel toppled

City police officers watch as the Mapes Hotel is leveled Sunday in downtown Reno, Nev. The implosion marked the end of a years-long legal battle between preservationists who wanted to save the 12-story hotel and those who wanted to raze it to remake the face of the city. During its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s, Mae West, the Marx Brothers and Sammy Davis Jr. performed in the Sky Room with its top-floor views of the Sierra Nevada. "I hated to see the old lady go down," said Sherrie Clark of Reno, who used to go to shows at the Mapes.
