COLLEGES

TRACK AND FIELD: Florida State's Joe Allen and Samantha George were named ACC male and female indoor performers of the week. Allen won the long jump in the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., and finished third in the triple jump. George set a school indoor record while winning the 400 meters in 53.56 seconds. That is the fastest time in the ACC this season and the third fastest in the country. Miami's Santana Moss, a wide receiver on the football team who led the Hurricanes with 54 catches last season, tied Dayne Ross of Lincoln for first in the 55 meters (6 seconds) last weekend at the Terrier Classic in Boston. Moss is the defending Big East Conference champion in the 60 meters. Florida's women's distance coach J.J. Clark has been named the head coach of the U.S. women's team for the 2001 World Championships.

NEW SURFACE: Florida Atlantic will install a FieldTurf artificial grass surface. The installation of a practice field will begin sometime after the completion of the Tom Oxley Athletic Center in September. FieldTurf provides an alternative to Astroturf type sports surfaces, by combining blades of artificial grass with a mixture of sand and cryogenic rubber granules.
