Controlled fires planned in Withlacoochee Forest

Published Feb. 1, 2000|Updated Sept. 26, 2005

The Florida Division of Forestry at the Withlacoochee Forestry Center will perform prescribed burns at the Richloam and Citrus tracts of the Withlacoochee State Forest beginning Wednesday. The Richloam burns will occur in different areas throughout the tract, and the Citrus burns should occur along the northern portion along State Road 44 and the western portion near County Road 491. Additional burns may be performed on the Croom and Headquarters tracts. The goal of these burns will be to reduce fuel and undergrowth in the sandhills and flatwoods. This opens the forest to its natural condition and reduces the chances of a severe and catastrophic wildfire. Motorists are asked to use caution when encountering smoke or the center's orange warning signs along the roadways. For information, call Vincent Morris, Forester at 754-6777.

Four chaplains who went

down with ship honored

SPRING HILL _ The American Legion Post No. 208 of Spring Hill will sponsor the annual Four Chaplains Memorial Service at 2 p.m. Sunday, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 13485 Spring Hill Drive. The service honors the four chaplains (a Methodist minister, a rabbi, a Catholic priest and a Lutheran minister) aboard the USS Dorchester, who went down with the ship after it was torpedoed Feb. 3, 1943. The four chaplains handed out the life jackets during the ordeal. When there were no jackets left, they gave away their own. Of the 904 men aboard the ship, 605 died. The chaplains were last seen with their arms linked, praying with the men remaining on the ship as it sank. All veterans organizations and their

auxiliaries with their colors and the public are invited to attend. For information, call Mary Hinds at 683-5699.
