Police say an elderly Clearwater woman found dead after an accident Monday on State Road 590 may have suffered from a medical problem that caused the collision.

Adaline G. Rench, 88, of 2751 Regency Oaks Blvd. was not injured in the crash, police said.

Police spokesman Wayne Shelor said Rench may have had a medical problem that triggered the collision. She was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived at the accident scene.

"Investigators believe the cause of the accident was medically related," Shelor said. "A stroke, a heart attack or something like that."

The accident happened at 10:15 a.m. on SR 590 near U.S. 19. Rench was driving a 1989 white Buick and was leaving a Wal-Mart near the intersection.

Shelor said she pulled out of the exit slowly as a van approached on SR 590. The driver of the van, identified as 72-year-old George Nanko of Clearwater, told police he saw the car edging out into traffic.

"He saw the car coming out slowly and thought it was going to coming to stop," Shelor said. "She pulled into his path very slowly without stopping."

The van hit the driver's side of Rench's car. Nanko was not injured.

"There was no trauma to her body," Shelor said. "An autopsy will pinpoint the cause of death."

No charges were filed.
