Police shot and killed a man Monday who held two women hostage inside a home in an exclusive neighborhood for more than six hours.
Michael Hardy, 33, who was armed, barricaded himself in the home and held authorities at bay until a SWAT team shot him.
Earlier Hardy released the woman who lived in the house, but refused to free the other woman, a housekeeper or babysitter, said Veda Coleman-Wright, a Broward County sheriff's spokeswoman.
The standoff began around 3 p.m. Monday after a neighbor called to report suspicious activity at the house and the employer of one of the women reported she had not come to work. A sheriff's deputy went to investigate.
Hardy may have been seeking money to buy cocaine, Coleman-Wright said. He was being sought on charges of armed robbery, armed burglary and armed kidnapping. He was released from prison last October after serving eight years of an 18-year sentence for armed robbery.
