DEPAUL: Ron Feiereisel, who played for the Blue Demons and in the NBA before becoming a coach and referee, died of natural causes Friday. He was 68.
AP POLL: Cincinnati, Stanford, Duke and Syracuse held the top four spots, but for the third straight week at least three teams moved into the Top 25: No. 20 Iowa State, last ranked in the final poll of the 1996-97 season; No. 22 LSU, which was out of the Top 25 for two weeks after a two-week run; and No. 23 Oregon, last ranked on Jan. 13, 1997, were the newcomers.
Florida dropped from 10th to 12th.
The SEC has six ranked teams, one off the record shared by the Big Ten (1993 and 1999) and the ACC (1997).
ACC: Virginia's Donald Hand and North Carolina's Brendan Haywood are co-players of the week. Hand averaged 20 points in three victories and had 11 assists. Haywood scored 36 points in two victories. His top game was 24 points against No. 21 Maryland.
SEC: Forwards Stromile Swift of LSU and Vincent Yarbrough of Tennessee are co-players of the week. Swift averaged 22.5 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in two victories. Yarbrough averaged 24.5 points, nine rebounds and 3.5 assists in two victories.
AP POLL: LSU, which matched its best SEC start at 6-1, jumped five spots to No. 7, the Tigers' highest ranking since Jan. 15, 1984. Connecticut (19-0) held No. 1 for the 13th consecutive week, the longest the Huskies have been on top, and they were a unanimous choice for the fourth consecutive week. Louisiana Tech is No. 2.
ACC: Virginia's Svetlana Volnaya and Schuye LaRue were player and rookie of the week. Volnaya averaged 15.7 points and four rebounds to help the Cavs go 2-1. LaRue averaged 14.3 points and nine rebounds in the three games.
SEC: LSU forward Katrina Hibbert and Tennessee point guard Kara Lawson are co-players of the week. Hibbert averaged 18.5 points and 8.5 rebounds; Lawson averaged 16 points, 1.5 rebounds, four assists and 2.5 steals.
