Gov. Jeb Bush has appointed Thomas Sawaya, a circuit judge in Marion County, to the 5th District Court of Appeal. Sawaya said Bush called with the offer Tuesday morning. The judge immediately accepted. The appeals court reviews cases from lower courts in 13 counties, including Citrus, Hernando and Marion. Sawaya was one of three candidates the appellate court's judicial nominating commission had recommended for the job. Bush is expected to appoint one more judge to the appellate court and two new judges for the 5th Judicial Circuit.
