180 lose phone service in Treasure Island

A construction crew accidentally cut an underground telephone cable Friday afternoon in the Sunset Beach area, cutting off phone service to about 180 homes for much of the rest of the day.

The phones were still out Friday evening, but GTE expected to the problem to be fixed by this morning.

A Treasure Island city crew looking for a sewer pipe put a probe into the ground and instead pulled up a telephone cable, damaging it at about 1:30 p.m., said GTE spokeswoman Cristina Coffin. The area affected was around 86th Terrace and West Gulf Boulevard, she said.

Man sought in robberies

at two 7-Eleven stores

ST. PETERSBURG _ Detectives are searching for a man who robbed two 7-Eleven stores early Friday.

An undisclosed amount of money was taken from both stores. No one was hurt, police said.

During the 1:40 a.m. robbery at 2632 Park St. N, the suspect asked to buy a lottery ticket. When the clerk didn't sell him a ticket, the man implied he had a gun and demanded all the money from the cash register. He drove away in a white Chevrolet Impala.

Police said the same man went to the 7-Eleven at 8351 Dr. M.L. King (Ninth) St. N at 3 a.m. He bought a lottery ticket and got an undisclosed amount of money after implying he had a weapon.
