A two-alarm blaze Friday afternoon gutted one apartment and damaged three others at an east Clearwater complex. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries in the 4 p.m. fire at Park Trace Apartments at 655 Fairwood Ave. Clearwater Deputy Fire Chief Peter Verhoeven said the cause of the fire is under investigation. No loss estimate had been established. A second-story apartment had heavy fire damage. Two apartments had smoke damage and another had fire and smoke damage, Verhoeven said. No one was in the apartments when the fire broke out and firefighters rescued three cats. At least one of the apartments was vacant, he said. Flames went through the roof of the second floor apartment. Firefighters called a second alarm about 20 minutes after arriving because they were concerned it would spread to other apartments.
