HOME&GARDEN BRIEFS

COCKROACH REMEDY: To rid your residence of cockroaches, try this homemade mix: Finely chop 1 garlic bulb and 1 small onion. Mix with 1 quart tap water, add 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper and let rest for an hour. Add 2 tablespoons liquid soap and mix well. When the foam subsides, strain into a spray bottle and apply to areas where cockroaches hide.

EMERGENCY ACTION: When a child swallows the liquid from a bottle that you suspect contained a harmful substance, transport the child to the nearest hospital. Take along the suspected container and any remaining content. This will enable physicians to quickly administer an antidote or take other necessary action.

MULCH SAVES: Conserve water in your lawn and garden by mulching. Mulch also suppresses weeds, stabilizes soil temperatures and improves the look of most landscapes. The best organic mulches are hay, pine, straw, wood chips and cottonseed.

CHANDELIER BLOOMS: To make more room on a dining table, decorate the room's chandelier with flowers instead of using the flowers and vase as a centerpiece.
