Fishermen find body of woman in barge canal

The body of an unidentified woman was discovered Saturday morning in the Cross Florida Barge Canal, and an autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.

The nude body of a 20- to 30-year-old black woman was discovered by fishermen about 6 a.m. Saturday.

It was partly in the water on the shore of the Citrus County side of the barge canal, about 100 yards west of U.S 19.

The barge canal is the county line of Citrus and Levy counties.

Citrus County Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating the death. The medical examiner's office in Leesburg is performing the autopsy, said sheriff's spokeswoman Gail Tierney. Tierney said the detectives could not locate any specific cause of death or injuries on the body.
