Published Sept. 9, 2000|Updated Sept. 27, 2005

WHAT: Short-track stockcar racing in Late Models, Figure 8s, Figure 8 Enduros, Street Stocks, Open Wheel Modifieds, Mini Stocks and Hornets.

WHEN: Racing starts at 7 p.m. Grandstands open at 5 p.m., and pit gates at 4.

WHERE: Sunshine Speedway, 4550 Ulmerton Road (State Road 688).

ADMISSION: Adults, $10; children 6-12, $4; children under 6 free; pits $17; free parking.

NOTES: The car count in Sunshine's top class, Late Models, has been down for much of the year. Only 10 cars were in last week's field.

It likely will improve somewhat, but it may not be the regular drivers who pump up the ranks.

Next week is the second of the three big Late Model races Sunshine has each season. It will be the Bud Light 100-lap Late Model Championship, which pays bigger money than normal.

With only a few exceptions, out-of-town drivers have not fared well in the speedway's big events, and for good reason.

It's a quarter-mile track, and the turns come up quickly. The regulars know how to get around on their home surface, but the occasional drivers need practice.

Often, the out-of-town drivers who want a serious shot at winning run at Sunshine the week before to dial in their cars. That means the competition gets better.
