About a dozen young people took two stolen cars on a joy ride Saturday, and nine ended up facing serious charges, authorities said.
The boys and girls, ranging in age from 12 to 15, were riding in a Dodge Dakota pickup truck and a Chrysler LeBaron convertible, said Capt. Tracy Mishler of the Temple Terrace Police Department. Both cars had been reported stolen in Tampa within the past two days.
They stopped about 3 p.m. on Whiteway Drive at a house with an open garage door. One youth entered the garage and came out with a motorized mini-bike. A neighbor saw the theft and called police, Mishler said.
When a patrol car approached the two vehicles at Crestover and Whiteway drives, the youths left the cars and ran. Officers from the Temple Terrace and Tampa police departments and deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office captured nine of them. Mishler said the nine face charges that include car theft, burglary, trespassing and resisting arrest without violence. All were taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
