Diego Serna had three goals and an assist to spark a five-goal second-half outburst as the Miami Fusion closed out the regular season by beating DC United 6-2 Saturday night and tying an MLS record for goals in one half by a team.
Serna started the scoring when he gathered a long pass from Jeff Bilyk seven minutes in. He fired an uncontested shot from 17 yards past Tom Presthus for the only goal of the first half.
After Serna set up Welton for a goal in the 46th minute, DC closed the gap to 2-1 when Geoff Aunger scored his first goal of the season during a scramble in front of the net.
But in the 55th minute, a game that featured two non-playoff teams, eight yellow cards, one ejection and handfuls of missed opportunities, became a rout.
Miami which outshot DC 13-5, scored four goals in 10 minutes, including two more by Serna, to establish a team record for most goals in a game.
