Developer wants land rezoned for new cellular phone tower

A Pinellas County developer wants to build a 400-foot communications tower northeast of Moon Lake and Ridge roads.

Despite the mixed reception given cellular telephone tower requests in Pasco County this summer, Dale Bleakley said the popularity of cellular phones is driving the demand for more towers.

Bleakley's Crocket Lake Commercial Tower, a steel-trellis antenna topped by an aircraft warning beacon, would stand on 45 acres east of Moon Lake Road, between Randee and Ridge roads.

Bleakley is trying to rezone the land for commercial development, a request expected to go before the planning commission next month. At August's meeting, planning commissioners voted against two of four tower proposals.

On the front side of the tower property, Bleakley proposes building a shopping center, although he has yet to find any tenants.

"That site's plenty big enough for any of the big retail users," he said.
