A man driving a stolen rental car led Hillsborough deputies on a chase Monday night and eventually got away on foot, but he left behind his driver's license, sheriff's officials said.
Details were unclear late Monday, but officials said everything started with a traffic stop about 10 p.m. After giving a deputy his license, the driver of a stolen car sped away, nearly hitting the deputy, officials said. The deputy chased the suspect briefly before the suspect lost control of his car at 10th Avenue and 26th Street.
The suspect spun out and landed in a ditch. At the same time, the stolen car's transmission went out, spraying transmission fluid on the road. As the deputy came through the intersection, officials said, his patrol car slid on the fluid and slammed into a palm tree.
The deputy suffered minor injuries, most of which were caused by the air bag. While the deputy was still dazed, the suspect got out of the car, which had been taken from Avis Car Rental, and ran away.
