topic of meeting

The Tampa Chapter of Mothers & More (formerly known as FEMALE) will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Bob Sierra Family YMCA, 4029 Northdale Blvd. Guest speaker Natalie Rios will lead a discussion on "Music and Young Children." The meeting is free and open to interested moms. Mothers & More is a national not-for-profit support organization for women making the transition from employment outside the home to full-time motherhood. Community meetings set

on desegregation plan

The Hillsborough County School District is holding community meetings to discuss the proposed school desegregation plan. A meeting will be held at Buchanan Middle School, 1001 W Bearss Ave., and Jefferson High School, 4401 Cypress St., at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Fourteen community meetings have been scheduled at various schools throughout the area. The Hillsborough County School Board is scheduled to review the proposal Sept. 26. It it is approved, the plan must be submitted to the U.S. Middle District Court in Tampa. The plan would not take effect until 2002. Motivational speaker

appears at high school

Motivational speaker Ron Johnson will speak at 7 p.m. today at a free community event sponsored by the Child Advocacy Department of Tampa Children's Hospital at St. Joseph's. Johnson, who grew up in New York City and was a gang member, will present his 10-step "Rites of Passage" at Hillsborough High School, 5000 N Boulevard. Johnson, who turned his life around and graduated from Columbia University, will discuss his life experiences and present a motivational talk about how today's parents can inspire youth to develop into responsible adults. Johnson will also autograph copies of the book Visions, which he co-authored. For information, call (813) 554-8216.

Art center schedules

meeting, awards reception

The Old Hyde Park Art Center, 705 Swann Ave., will host a general membership meeting and an awards reception for the Oil and Acrylic Competition at 7 p.m. today The free event will include a program featuring a family of Chinese artisans who live in the Riverview area. The father, Yang Neng Chan, is a noted painter, the mother, Chuan Ying Zhou, is an embroidery artist, and daughter Ping Chen is a teacher and mixed media artist. Noted poet to hold

reading at UT gallery

Yusef Komunyakaa, a Pulitzer prize-winning poet, will present a reading at 8 p.m. today in the Scarfone Gallery at the University of Tampa, 401 W Kennedy Blvd. The reading is sponsored by the The Writer's Voice of the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA. Komunyakaa's books and compact discs will be available for sale. Admission is $10. Proceeds will benefit the Writer's Voice Annual Giving Campaign, which sponsors after-school reading and writing workshops for under-served youth in Hillsborough County.
